A Quick Guide to Multimeter

All technicians and engineers are aware of the measurement device known as multimeter. You can find multimetersin different forms on the market based on their characteristics. The primary function of a multimeteris measuring the electrical properties of tools, along with wiring in industries. If you are wondering how to test a phone line without a phone, then you can do this with a multimeter. Currently, this device is used for different purposes, depending on your requirements, such as for dealing with laboratories, electricity, circuits and power sources.

You can select the different electrical parameters by using a rotary switch or dial that can be found on the front side of the instrument. Multimeters come in handy for measuring three basic electrical characteristics of resistance, voltage and current. You can also use this device for testing the continuity between two points found in an electrical circuit. It is a handheld device with negative and positive indicator needles and a numeric LCD display. Multimeters can be used for testing household wiring, batteries, power supplies and electric motors. The essential elements of a multimeterinclude a power source, display, controls and probes.

There are analog and digital multimeters available and the operation and function of both remain the same. There are two probes or leads on the instrument, which are red and black and three ports. The latter is used for plugging into the common port, whereas the former plugs into other ports, depending on the requirement. Once you have plugged in the lead, the knob in the center of the multimeter should be switched on in order to perform the appropriate function for the particular component test. You can get a reading from the meter by touching the end of every probe to the end of the components’ terminals. You should avoid touching the bar ends of the metal when it is activated because it can lead to electrical shock.
